How deep is your love for authors?

4 PM CEST

Following on from a successful breakout session during this year’s SSP Annual Meeting, we are re-running this panel on Author Experience for publishers to join online. Guided by our panel of industry experts, we will take you through our self-assessment quiz that will reveal just how much you really care about your authors.

Do you have a strategy for how to interact with your authors? Do you use modern marketing technology to personalize their experience? How do you guide your authors through the submission process? Do you update your authors about the status of their manuscript? If an author complains about parts of your service, how do you respond?

This will be a fun and interactive webinar session we’ll help you assess how good your author experience is. We will discuss different elements of author experience with our guest speakers while participants complete their answers. You will leave the session some practical suggestions for improvements. The session will certainly keep you entertained and there will be ample opportunity for questions and comments from the audience.

Short summary

We had a lot of fun when we originally ran this webinar at SSP in Boston in May, so we thought we would get the band back together, so to speak, and give our webinar community a little treat. Regardless of where your organization is placed in the publishing landscape, this webinar has been designed to help you get thinking about your workflows and evaluate how you engage with your authors.

Joining our host Romy Beard for this interactive session were Colleen Scollans from Clarke & Esposito, David Haber from the American Society for Microbiology, and Rory Williams from Rockefeller Press. Colleen started by describing author experience as all the interactions the author has with a publisher, which could range from submitting a manuscript to a publisher’s social media presence. For David, as a publisher, he spoke about how useful author experience can be as a tool to drive process change, and to take a step back to view the whole publishing process as an author. Rory confirmed that they take the same view at Rockefeller Press, where they use author experience as a way to gain insights into the publishing process.

After the introductions, participants were able to rate their organization in response to a range of different questions about author experience. Our smart panel helpfully added in their own strategies and thoughts on different topics such as: ways check what authors say and do, making a frictionless process for authors, and creating a sense of community. The webinar is a great way to evaluate the author experience your organization delivers, with lots of hints and tips on what you could do next.
